The Importance of a Logo

by Danetta Smith

Try thinking of Nike without the swish, McDonalds without the golden arches, or Target without the bullseye. You can’t, can you? 9 times out of 10, when we see a logo, we know which company it represents.

Every business, large and small, should have a logo.

Your logo should be remembered by your customers. It needs to be simple but still effective. Your logo should be appropriate for your business. It should showcase who you are or what you do. It’s easy for your customers to forget your name, but if you add a logo to go with it, it may make all the difference.

Make customers remember your logo and not your competitors.

When creating a logo, you should consider the type of people that you are trying to reach. It is also important to take a look at your competition’s logo. You always want to set yourself apart from your competition and this includes your logo.

Unique choice of fonts

Many people think that logos have to include an image to be successful. This is untrue. Think of Microsoft, Wal-Mart, and Coca-Cola. Their logos are recognizable and memorable because of their font creativity.

Debating whether to alter your logo?

It is completely up to you. However, many professionals say that it is a bad idea to alter your logo completely because it weakens the effectiveness of the logo. Your customers need to see the same logo over and over again to ingrain it in their head. If you change the look of your logo, the customer will have to readapt and start the process of remembrance all over.

Tweaking your logo

It is okay however to "tweak" your logo every so often to keep your logo looking fresh and current. For example, Pepsi tends to change the size and shape of the colors in their logo every few years, but they always have a circle with red, white, and blue streaks.
