Simple Ways to Make your Workplace Stronger

by Ann Johnston

At Central States Media we know that a huge part of your brand’s success starts with the internal aspects of your business.  Once the people inside your company walls become your brand champions, you can feel confident that you have a force of individuals singing your praises.  In order to make these aspects of your workplace a reality, consider the points below:

1. A clear purpose
Every company has a goal… get more customers… get more donations… get more members.  By determining your end-goal, this will help you spell out a clear company/organization purpose.  It is also important that your staff knows what this purpose is so everyone is on the same path to achieving your goal.  One of the best ways is to formally write a mission statement and then action statements in order to maintain that mission.

2. Motivated and creative people
Every employee brings their own flavor of benefits to the table when contributing to a company’s success.  And because every person brings something unique, it’s important to  recruit individuals with different backgrounds and different ways of viewing the world… your customers/clients are all unique, so your employees should be too!  What is essential, however, is that each and every person is committed to a shared goal – from the president/owner of your company, all the way down to part-time staff members.  There is no room for “I” in a successful workplace.  Even though individuality is valued, in the end, the idea of “team” takes for forefront.

3. Guidelines as Opposed to Strict Rules
Nobody wants to go to work every day feeling like they are being tracked every moment without a single second to breathe or take a reasonable break.  Some workplaces take this too far and the office becomes a world of anarchy and chaos.  Even though the world “rule” has a stigma that we obtained from grammar school, rules should still be embraced by companies.  Employees generally like to have some sense of limitations as to what they can do, with a feeling that they aren’t abusing the system.  Essentially, a set of standards needs to be clear to all employees so they feel they can maximize their own time; they know when they need to push themselves harder or feel confident that they have earned a vacation day.

4. Communication is Key
Any successful relationship, work or personal always has this key element – communication.  Employees should feel empowered to speak openly and honestly about their ideas and/or concerns about the working environment.  Great managers gain so much by walking around the office and engaging in conversation with employees.  Also, depending on the size of your company, newsletters help to inform staff members as to the events around the workplace that they may not be directly associated with each and every day.
